Music seems to be a natural interest for people. I’ve read that even in ancient times, humans produced sounds from “instruments” like rocks or animal skins stretched over wooden frames. Music is something most people need. I think music is important because it can be both an individual and group experience.
Music is a way of sharing a common bond or feeling. When we’re children, we learn very simple songs in the form of nursery rhymes. These songs teach us about our culture by telling us what’s acceptable and what’s not. We play music and sing in religious ceremonies because it enhances the worship experience. We play music for national pride when our country experiences success.
We have national anthems to share our love and pride for our country. We have music for our school and for our athletic teams. In fact, music has become a big part of athletic games. We use it to taunt the other teams, as well as to celebrate when points are scored for our team.
Music is also a major part of individual experiences. When we fall in love, music is usually a part of that experience. Couples talk about having “our song.” This refers to the song that was playing when they met or that both liked when they fell in love. When we get married, we play music during the ceremony. It expresses how we feel. We play music to calm our nerves or to stimulate ourselves to get on with a task. We also play music for simple enjoyment.
Music is special to us because it expresses our connection with our culture and enhances our individual experiences. Nothing else seems to capture our feelings so well. |
